Evidence Strength
3/5 — ModerateModerate evidence. Cold shower specifically has less data than cold water immersion, but the physiological mechanisms (norepinephrine, dopamine) are the same.
Overview
A progressive cold exposure protocol starting with 15-30 seconds of cold at the end of your regular shower, building up to 2-5 minutes of cold-only showers. An accessible entry point to deliberate cold exposure without needing a plunge or ice bath.
Wellness education and routine support only. Review the evidence, caveats, and interactions before trying this protocol, and ask a clinician when medical conditions, pregnancy, medications, or symptoms are involved.
How To Do It
- 1
End with cold
At the end of your normal warm shower, turn the water to cold for the last 15-30 seconds.
- 2
Focus on breathing
Use slow, controlled breathing. The gasp reflex is normal — breathe through it.
- 3
Increase duration weekly
Add 15-30 seconds each week. Build gradually.
- 4
Eventually start cold
Once comfortable, try starting the shower cold and staying for 2-5 minutes.
Progression Path
Week 1-2: 15-30 sec cold at end of warm shower. Week 3-4: 60 sec. Week 5+: 2-5 min fully cold.
The Evidence
Each claim is linked to its source study. Confidence reflects the study design — systematic reviews and RCTs rank highest.
The effect of cold showering on health and work
Routine cold showering reduced self-reported sickness absence from work.

Interactions & Warnings
Review 3 contraindications and 1 interaction note before adding this protocol to a routine.
Contraindications
- Raynaud's disease
- Cardiovascular conditions (consult physician)
- Pregnancy
Interactions
- Don't do immediately after strength training if hypertrophy is the goal (blunts mTOR)

Related Protocols
Deliberate Cold Exposure
11 min/week total of cold immersion at 50-59°F across 2-4 sessions. Produces a 250% dopamine increase lasting hours, boosts metabolism, and builds mental resilience.
Finnish Sauna Protocol
Sauna at 176-212°F for 15-20 min, 2-4x/week. The KIHD study (n=2315) showed 40% lower all-cause mortality with frequent use. Triggers heat shock proteins and improves vascular function.
Contrast Therapy (Hot-Cold Cycling)
Alternate 3-5 min hot and 1-2 min cold for 3-5 cycles. Creates vascular pumping that enhances circulation, reduces inflammation, and accelerates recovery. End on cold.
Cold Recovery Session
Use short cold-water immersion after selected hard sessions when soreness reduction matters more than adaptation signaling.
